Traffic Rules (Ottawa, Ontario)

Traffic Lights & Arrows. Test header.

  • Step 1: Stop before the stop line/crosswalk.
  • Step 2: Check for pedestrians and oncoming traffic.
  • Step 3 (Right on Red): If no sign prohibits it, you may turn right after a full stop when safe.
  • Step 4 (Left on Red, one-way → one-way): If both the road you’re on and the road you’re turning onto are one-way, you may turn left on red after a full stop when safe (unless signed otherwise).
  • Step 5: Yield to pedestrians and any vehicles with a green signal/arrow.
  • Step 1: If you can safely stop before the stop line, stop.
  • Step 2: If stopping isn’t safe, clear the intersection with caution don’t accelerate to “beat” the light.
  • Step 1: Proceed if the intersection is clear; still yield to pedestrians in your path.
  • Step 2 (Green Arrow): Protected turn goes in the arrow’s direction; opposing traffic/pedestrians are stopped (still scan).
  • Flashing red: Stop, then proceed when safe (treat like a stop sign).
  • Flashing yellow: Slow and proceed with caution.

Intersections & Right-of-Way

  • Step 1: Full stop at the line.
  • Step 2: First-come, first go.
  • Step 3: If you arrive together, yield to the right.
  • Step 4: When turning left, yield to oncoming traffic going straight/right.
  • Step 1: Stop fully; creep to see if needed.
  • Step 2: Yield to cross-traffic with no stop and to pedestrians.
  • Step 3: Turn when a safe gap appears.

Pedestrians & Crossings (PXOs/Crosswalks)

  • Step 1: Stop for pedestrians at PXOs and when they’re in your lane or close to it at crosswalks.
  • Step 2: Remain stopped until they fully exit the crossing.
  • Step 3: Do not pass a vehicle stopped at a crossing.
  • Step 1 (Approach): Slow to posted speed; choose your lane early using signs/markings.
  • Step 2 (Yield): Yield to traffic in the roundabout and to pedestrians at crosswalks.
  • Step 3 (Enter): Enter when a safe gap opens. Do not stop inside.
  • Step 4 (Exit): Signal right before your exit; watch for pedestrians/bikes at the crosswalk.
  • Step 1: When a school bus has flashing red lights and a stop arm extended, you must stop from both directions on undivided roads.
  • Step 2: Stop well back and stay stopped until the lights stop flashing and the arm folds away.
  • Step 3 (Divided Roads): If a median physically separates you from the bus, oncoming traffic does not stop; traffic behind the bus still must stop.
  • Step 1: Slow on approach; be ready to stop if lights/bells/gates activate.
  • Step 2: Never stop on tracks; ensure there’s space to clear completely.
  • Step 3: Do not pass another vehicle within 30 m of a crossing; don’t shift gears on tracks.
  • Step 4: Obey gates/lights; wait until fully off/raised before proceeding.

Emergency Vehicles & “Move Over” (Stopped Vehicles with Flashing Lights)

  • Step 1: Yield the right-of-way signal and pull to the right edge; stop clear of intersections.
  • Step 2: Stay stopped until they pass; re-enter traffic carefully.
  • Step 1: Slow down and be prepared to stop.
  • Step 2: Move over to leave a full lane if possible; if not, pass with extra caution at a safe speed.
  • Step 1: Obey posted limits; if none are posted, the Ontario default urban limit is 50 km/h unless a municipality posts lower.
  • Step 2 (Ottawa): Many residential areas are posted 40 km/h under the City’s Gateway Speed Limit program; watch for community gateways.
  • Step 3: Community Safety Zones (often near schools) mean increased fines and slowdown.
  • Step 4: In construction zones, obey reduced limits; hefty penalties apply.
  • Step 1: Signal at least 3 seconds before moving; check mirrors.
  • Step 2: Shoulder-check the blind spot; change lanes only if clear.
  • Step 3 (Passing Cyclists): Leave at least 1 metre when passing; if you can’t, wait.
  • Step 4: Don’t drive/stop in bike lanes (except when turning, after yielding, if markings allow).
  • Step 1: Fire hydrant: Don’t park within 3 m.
  • Step 2: Intersections/crosswalks: Don’t park within 9 m of an intersection or marked crosswalk.
  • Step 3: Railway crossings: Don’t park within 15 m of the nearest rail.
  • Step 4: Don’t block driveways, sidewalks, bike lanes, bus stops, or park where signs prohibit.
  • Step 1 (Uphill with curb): Turn front wheels away from the curb; let the car roll gently back so the tire touches the curb; set the park + parking brake.
  • Step 2 (Uphill without curb): Turn wheels to the right (toward the edge); set park/parking brake.
  • Step 3 (Downhill): Turn wheels to the right (toward the curb/edge); set park/parking brake.
  • Step 1: Signal right; stop beside the target space, rear bumpers aligned with the vehicle ahead; leave ~1 m side gap.
  • Step 2: Reverse slowly, steering hard right to bring your rear toward the curb.
  • Step 3: When your back wheel nears the curb, straighten the wheels; continue reversing.
  • Step 4: Turn hard left to tuck front in; finish within 30 cm of curb; center in the space; wheels straight; set park/parking brake.
  • Step 1: From Dec 1 to Mar 31, a winter parking ban can be called during/after snowfalls. Watch City alerts.
  • Step 2: When a ban is in effect, do not park on city streets overnight (and sometimes daytime) unless exempted; use permitted alternatives.
  • Step 3: Always check the City’s current notice before parking on-street in snow events.

Reversing, 3-Point Turns & U-Turns

  • Step 1: 360° check: mirrors, over-shoulder; ensure path is clear.
  • Step 2: Reverse slowly; keep looking back over your right shoulder.
  • Step 3: Yield to all traffic/pedestrians/cyclists; never reverse into a live crosswalk.
  • Step 1: Check traffic; signal right and pull to the curb; then signal left.
  • Step 2: Turn left across the road and stop near the opposite curb; reverse right to the original side.
  • Step 3: Shift to drive; scan and complete the turn; straighten.
  • Step 4: Only do this where sightlines are clear and it’s legal (not on busy/fast roads).
  • Step 1: Do not U-turn where signs prohibit.
  • Step 2: No U-turn on a curve, near a hill/crest, on/near a railway crossing, or where you cannot see 150 m in both directions.
  • Step 3: No U-turn at a signalized intersection on a red light.
  • Step 1: Use headlights from half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise, and anytime visibility is under ~150 m (heavy rain/snow/fog).
  • Step 2: In poor weather, slow down, increase following distance, and clear all windows/lights of snow/ice before driving.

Distraction, Impairment & Seatbelts

  • Step 1: Do not hold/use a phone or other handheld device while driving, even at a red light.
  • Step 2: If you must use your phone, pull over and park legally first.
  • Step 1: Never drive impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or drugs; Ontario has zero BAC rules for novice/young drivers.
  • Step 2: Plan a safe ride (taxi/ride-share/designated driver).
  • Step 1: Driver and all passengers must wear seatbelts; the driver is responsible for passengers under 16.
  • Step 2: Use proper child seats/boosters per height/weight.

Ottawa Photo-Enforcement (Good to Know)

  • Step 1: Always stop on red before the line; never enter on red.
  • Step 2: Ottawa operates red-light cameras at many intersections; locations are published on Open Ottawa.
  • Step 1: Obey posted speeds, especially in Community Safety Zones and near schools.
  • Step 2: Ottawa publishes current ASE camera locations (map/list) and continues to expand the program.
  • Step 1: Check winter parking ban status during snow (Dec 1–Mar 31).
  • Step 2: Watch for time-of-day and permit restrictions in neighborhoods.
  • Step 3: Don’t block sidewalks/paths. Ottawa enforces accessibility and snow clearing.
  • Step 1: Expect lower limits (often 30–40 km/h) signed near schools and in traffic-calmed areas.
  • Step 2: Yield to crossing guards; their stop sign has legal authority.
